The Society Society Visit to the Netherlands
Lord Grimthorpe and Cardiff's Pierhead Clock
Introduction
The inaugural meeting of The Wales and Marches Horological Society was held at The Welsh Folk Museum , St Fagans, in January 1982. The Society began as a section of The Antiquarian Horological Society with which it still maintains strong links. Members meet in an informal atmosphere to exchange ideas on horology, and they are invited to contribute to meetings in formal or informal talks.
Membership is diverse and includes people from a wide range of professions, including professional horologists and serious collectors. Interests range from modern to early clocks and watches, turret clocks and barometers.
The Society holds three meetings each year (spring, summer and autumn). An account of each meeting appears on the Last Meetings page. There is an optional field trip in the summer, usually at the end of July or beginning of August. Meetings are an all-day event, generally with at least one guest speaker, and mostly with luncheon included. Three different venues are used each year; one of which is at the Welsh Folk Museum, St. Fagans. Other venues include the Old Town Hall at Grosmont, The George Hotel in Chepstow, Belmont Abbey near Hereford, the Soudley Heritage Centre in the Forest of Dean, Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd Museum and The Fox and Hounds, Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan. This spread of venues makes travelling possible for members who come from as far away as Cheltenham and Pembrokeshire. The having an all-day programme three times a year is popular with members and a good attendance is achieved.
